This guide will take you through the necessary steps to install and log in to SugarCRM Community Edition. Once installed, you can optionally upgrade to the latest version of SugarCRM Community Edition, or upgrade to SugarCRM Professional or Enterprise. SugarCRM Community Edition is a free application. The only costs involved in the below guide is the web hosting from HostMonster (which is the most cost-effect, feature-rich, and most flexible, hosting provide that I have found – that’s why I host all my websites, including www.cloudproductivity.net with them).
1. Setup Hosting
First, we need to have somewhere to put the SugarCRM system. You can build your own web host, or, to get up and running in minutes, simply get started with HostMonster. HostMonster is a full-featured web hosting provider. This means that they will look after the SugarCRM files and data so you don’t have to worry about servers, backups and other techie things. I believe it’s better to leave this kind of service to the experts, since they do this day in, day out. Your initial registration also includes a free domain/site name. Click on the image below to open HostMonster in a new tab or window and let’s get started.
On this page, simply click on the Get Started button.
2. Pick a Domain Name
Your SugarCRM system needs to be given a name. This can be anything you like. If you will be using this hosting service for SugarCRM exclusively, you might want to give it a domain name like your-website-namecrm.com. This will make the name different to your normal website and make it very easy to remember. Enter the domain/site name that you would like and click the Next button.
If the domain name you wanted is already taken you may get a message that the domain name is already in use. You can pick from the suggested alternatives, or try a new name and repeat. Note: there’s no need to click the ‘Back’ button in your browser, just keep clicking the Next button.
3. Billing and Package Information
Next, enter your account and billing information and choose your site hosting options.
In the Package Information section, make sure you select at least Site Backup Pro. This will make sure you data is always safe and backed up, and more importantly, means that there is one less thing you need to setup in order to start using SugarCRM.
Complete the rest of the form on this page and click the Submit button.
4. Your HostMonster Control Panel (cPanel).
Continue through the remainder of the steps in the registration process. Once you reach the last page, the ‘Complete’ page, you will be emailed you username and password for your HostMonster account.
Once you have the email with your access details (username and password), head back to www.hostmonster.com and click on the Control Panel Login button at the top of the page.
Then enter the username and password that was in your Welcome email.
You’ll then be taken to your Control Panel.
5. Find SimpleScripts
You’ll now be in your Control Panel, or cPanel. This is where you have full control over your account. From email setup, database configuration and even statistics about the status of your account package and service status – we don’t need to worry about any of this.
Look for the SimpleScripts icon, in the Software/Services section and click it.
6. SimpleScripts Dashboard
SimpleScripts is a tool that gives you one-click installations of many popular web applications.
Scroll down to the Script List section and find SugarCRM under the Client Management section and click it.
Note that the version shown here (6.0.1) may be different to the version you have available to install. If the version you can install is not the latest version, don’t worry, we will upgrade it once it is installed, in Part 2 of this guide.
7. Installing SugarCRM
Click the Install button.
First, make sure the latest version available is selected in Step 1. Then, make sure you have the right path selected that you want to install SugarCRM in – this is under the “Where would you like SugarCRM installed” section. If you’ve just registered with HostMonster and you don’t intend to use this account for anything else, you can safely leave the path/URL section as is (blank). Otherwise, you can enter something like ‘crm’ or ‘sugarcrm’ in the text field to have SugarCRM installed in a folder inside the web site. Tick the checkbox for Legal Information and click Complete!
8. Installation Progress
The installer will go through the process of setting up SugarCRM, showing you the progress in real-time.
Once it has finished, you will see the URL/link to the SugarCRM system and the login username and password details. Changing the username and password will be covered in Part 2 of this guide.
You will also receive an email with the same details.
Click on the Login URL link to go to your brand new SugarCRM installation.
9. Your SugarCRM System is Ready
You can now login and begin using SugarCRM Community Edition.
